EagleRider’s Lake Tahoe Self-Drive Motorcycle Tour begins in Lake Tahoe, California and takes you on an unforgettable ride through the most exciting and breathtaking destinations in Northern California and even into Nevada. On this 8-day adventure you will ride through everything from the cities of Reno and Eureka to the natural wonders of Mount Shasta, Lake Shasta, and Humboldt Redwood Park. Don’t forget about the tour through California’s capital city, Sacramento before riding across the Sierra Nevada and back into Lake Tahoe.
Arrive in South Lake Tahoe and transfer to your hotel. Legend has it that Lake Tahoe was created when an Evil Spirit was in pursuit of an innocent American Indian. Attempting to aid the Indian, the Great Spirit gave him a branch of leaves; each leave dropped would produce a body of water that the Evil Spirit has to circumvent. But during the chase, the Indian dropped the whole branch in fright – creating Lake Tahoe. Overnight.
This morning you pick up your bike at EagleRider’s Lake Tahoe store, and begin your journey through Northern California. Head north and ride along the shores of Lake Tahoe, via Meeks Bay, Tahoma, and Tahoe City. Continue north to Truckee, and from here you cross into the state of Nevada. Reno is a city of diverse extremes, calling itself “The Biggest Little City in the World” and your destination. Overnight.
Out of Reno you take Hwy 395 and ride along the Diamond Mountains all the way up to Susanville, located at the head of the Honey Lake Valley. Here, you pick up Hwy 44 and cruise through Lassen National Forest. Elevations in the forest range from 800 ft near Butte Meadows to 8,172 ft. at West Prospect Peak. You stick with Hwy 44 – enter Shasta County – and arrive in Redding. Located in the center of a year-round recreation area, Redding provides scenic access to the surrounding Shasta Trinity National Forests and Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area. Overnight.
Today you are in for a real treat. Be prepared for smooth curves, small logging towns, and having the roads almost to yourself – this pure isolated beauty is the essence of Northern California! You ride through the Shasta Trinity National Forest, where elevations range from 620 ft. at Lake Shasta to 14,162 ft. at Mount Shasta. You continue all the way out to the Pacific Coast, to Eureka. The chief port between San Francisco and the Columbia River, Eureka is a lumbering, industrial and commercial city on Humboldt Bay. Overnight.
You go south and travel through some of California’s most impressive and unspoiled landscape. Meander through Humboldt Redwood Park, rugged mountainous areas and rolling farmlands. Stick with Hwy 101 until you arrive in Legget, where you take Hwy 1 – enjoy a most impressive ride along the Pacific Coast. Fort Bragg, located on a scenic stretch of Hwy 1 that extends from Legget to Sausalito, is your base for tonight.
Enter Hwy 20 towards Willits – the Redwood Route – that will take you through Jackson State Forest. Be aware that there are several grade changes along this road and watch for deer throughout the forest! Once you are in Willits you continue southeast and find yourself in simply picture-perfect scenery. Ride along the Mayacmas and through Alexander Valley – you might want to make a stop at Clear Lake. Travel via Napa Valley and over to Sacramento, California’s capital and your stop for tonight. Overnight.
From Sacramento you ride to the historic town of Auburn. Here, pick up Hwy 49 and go to Placerville, located less than 10 miles from the original California gold discovery place. You cross the Sierra Nevada and head back to South Lake Tahoe. Upon arrival it will be time to return your bike at EagleRider’s Lake Tahoe location and transfer back to your hotel. Overnight.
Today your fantastic trip will come to an end with your departure flight back home.
